Good Church People love to quote 2 Chronicles 7:14. Or rather they love to wear it, because it’s usually printed on a t-shirt with an eagle carrying an American flag. This is the verse that says, “…if my people, who are called by my name, humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

Only, there are a few concepts in that verse they don’t seem to fully understand. Like…

  • Who he means by “my people”
  • What it means to invoke his name
  • Who is supposed to humble themselves
  • What it means to pray
  • What it means to seek God
  • Who is supposed to do the turning
  • Where heaven is
  • What forgiveness is
  • What nation he’s talking about

Other than those few things, they’ve got it.

Maybe it’s time to reconsider some of our choices, and retire the t-shirt.

As we wrap up the book of Matthew, Jesus calls us back into the classroom. He has a few things he wants to clear up for us.
